Period Health, Women’s Health, and Fertility

Healthy periods are my mission in life. Acupuncture & Eastern medicine have a very long history of putting period health, fertility, & women’s health first.

Eastern medicine combines a whole body view of health to understand why periods are painful, heavy, or irregular. It looks deeply into postpartum care for the mother, and the transition of perimenopause. If you are looking for a deeper understanding of hormonal health at any stage of life —puberty to menopause, working with acupuncture & Eastern medicine can be life changing.

Period Health

Here’s the deal: your period CAN be easy, pain free, not too heavy, and free of PMS. It also doesn’t have to sap all your energy.

We often take really unpleasant menstrual symptoms for granted, that we do not have to put up with. Examples:

headaches or migraines, gas, bloating, the dreaded period poops, cramps, breast tenderness, mood swings, super heavy flows, clots in flows, irregular periods, feeling depressed before, during, or after your period.

All of these quality of life issues can improve with a combination of acupuncture and/or Eastern herbal medicine.  I’ve worked with periods since 2013, and, I’m here to tell you, the world of acupuncture and Eastern medicine has a deep understanding of every pattern that leads to these uncomfortable symptoms that we generally accept as ‘normal’.

Who benefits? Everyone with a period —teenagers and adults.

If you’re ready to see how easy your period can be, and take back the nearly quarter of your life that you spend on your period, give our clinic a call to schedule an appointment today.

Perimenopause & Menopause Health

Like periods, perimenopause or the change doesn’t have to be unpleasant, or dare I say, brutal.

Mood swings, forgetfulness, scattered-or foggy brain, dryness of all .the. things, and hot flashes all improve dramatically with regular acupuncture and/or Eastern herbal medicine.

To help the perimenopause transition be as enjoyable as possible, I like to combine acupuncture, herbal medicine, and simple food therapy tips to help you continue to feel like you during this time.

I have over 10 years of experience and am board certified in Eastern herbal medicine through the NCCAOM. Most patients see dramatic reductions in hot flashes in just one week of using an individualized herbal formula. If you aren’t interested in acupuncture, we also have herbal consult appointments available. If you do want acupuncture, herbal consults are included in the acupuncture treatment.

Menopause

If symptoms linger from your perimenopause days, they typically respond well to individualized acupuncture, food therapy, and maybe some herbal medicine approaches.

Fertility

Struggling with fertility often feels like an isolating experience full of ups and downs— such as disappointment each month with the lack of a pregnancy or the pain when friends and those around you seem to conceive with ease. You are not alone. Around 7 million U.S. couples face difficulty in conceiving every month.

Hope is not lost. Acupuncture and East Asian herbal medicine help you re-establish healthy reproductive cycles by clearing blockages in your qi, improving digestion and absorption of key nutrients to regulate your reproductive hormones, addressing stress, and clearing other factors that block fertility. Acupuncture and herbal medicine enhance your fertility and bring you closer to your fertile potential. Ultimately, I work with you as as an individual to identify what are the key components your body needs to regain reproductive vitality.

As your practitioner, I’m committed to walking this journey with you, offering treatment, guidance, and hope along the way. Fertility treatment is not just for women. Male factors can be a contributing aspect of the fertility equation that are often overlooked and under-treated.

Female fertility treatment helps:

  • Create a healthy and fertile internal environment

  • Regulate hormonal irregularities

  • Increase blood flow to the reproductive organs

  • Nourish follicle development and maturation

  • Regulate ovulation

  • Build a healthy uterine lining for embryo implantation

  • Reduce the stress and anxiety that often accompanies the fertility journey

Male fertility treatment helps:

  • Improve overall health

  • Improve motility and morphology of sperm

  • Increase sperm count

  • Improve libido and testosterone levels

  • Increase blood flow to reproductive organs

  • Reduce blockages and local stagnation in the reproductive organs

  • Reduce the stress and anxiety that often accompanies the fertility journey

Non-binary, gender fluid, transgender fertility

Fertility is a journey for every gender. Lindsey & the staff at Blue Heron respect your journey and can talk about reproductive health in a way to help you feel safe, heard, and respected.

Pregnancy

Lindsey has 10 years of experience helping individuals travel through each trimester of pregnancy. Acupuncture is known to help with morning sickness in the first trimester (or beyond if it continues past the first trimester).

It is also effective at helping with aches and pains as the baby grows, especially back pain and sciatica.

We can even plan preparing for labor to ensure that the yin side of labor (the cervical ripening and dilation) are ready for the big due date.

Postpartum Care

We tend to focus on fertility and pregnancy in this country. Once a baby is born, the mother or nonbinary parent can get lost in the focus on wellness check ups and baby health. As an acupuncturist, having a nourishing focus on the mother is crucial. Acupuncture and food therapy can play a huge role in helping you recover:

  • Improve milk flow if there are any challenges during breastfeeding

  • Help support mastitis

  • Support you during or help avoid postpartum anxiety or depression

  • Help support energy, mood, and a reduction in heavy lochia

  • Help recover quickly if you lost significant blood during birth

  • Improve C-section recovery outcomes

If you’ve ever known anyone with postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety, then you’ll know how challenging it can be. It can also show up anytime in the first year. I'm here for you at any point in the postpartum journey.
